q & a

What is all of this? What's wrong with you?
hi. this is sort of a personal reference to keep track of what's what and who's who in my head.
i have Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD), which is similar to Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
honestly i don't want to explain all the nuances on how the two disorders differ. it's not the same for everybody, anyway.
the main diagnostic difference than bars me, specifically, from DID rather than OSDD (the thing I have) is that in my system, the amnesia barriers that my alters experience between one another seem to be uncommon and only partial.
if you care to learn more about either or both of these things, i've put links to some sources I consider good at the end of this page.
besides that, i've been diagnosed with good ol' run of the mill treatment-resistant depression, general anxiety, ADHD, StPD, and Complex PTSD. i also likely have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome but have no formal diagnosis. if you want to know more about what any of those things are... just google 'em!If this is for self-reference, why do you have a Q&A page?
this site, as a whole, is also a way for me to let people know more about me (and us) in a way that's a little less immediately vulnerable and without having to answer a million different questions a million different times.
Who are all of these people who's names you have listed? Who is "us"?
they're the names of all the alters in my system (including me, whoever it is you'd like to assume wrote this). so, if you're wondering, yes, they're different people, but no, they do not exist separately in space. we all inhabit the same brain and body.
Okay, so like... Why are all your alters drawn as, like, animals or furries?
Humans are so boring are you kidding me... It feels better this way. Next question
Are all of your alters listed here?
Nope!
Why do you go by Fish if no one in your system does?
my legal last name is Fisher! Several alters also respond readily to "Fish".
it's a great way to refer to any one of us when you don't know who's fronting, or to refer to the system as a whole. plus, it's just a good nickname.
Can I ask who you are/who's fronting?
Only privately! And only if you're willing to accept that you may not get a clear, definitive answer. Literally we don't even know all of the time!
That said; sure, go ahead! If you're reading this you obviously already know we're a system... So we don't see why not. Just don't be weird or pushy! Thanks
What does [vocab word] mean?
here's a brief terminology list:
- Alter: A unique personality within a system. Differentiated from other members of a given system through various traits, memories, opinions, emotions, etc.
- System: The collective group of alters inhabiting the brain/body of someone with DID/OSDD.
- Front(ing): When an alter has full executive control of the body and is fully conscious.
- Co-front(ing): When an alter is fronting, and one or more other alters are conscious and aware of the outside world. The non-fronting alter(s) are sometimes able to take control of the body in this state.
- Co-conscious: Similar to co-fronting; when an alter is fronting, and one or more other alters are conscious and aware of the outside world. In this state, the non-fronting alters aren't able to control the body.
- Host: Typically defined as the alter the fronts the most frequently.
- Co-host: An alter that fronts frequently, often in specific reoccurring situations (e.g. school, home, work, ect.)
- Internal Self-Helper: An alter that has knowledge of other alters and their relationships with one another. These alters tend to the needs of other alters (sometimes not all alters, though) to the best of their abilities.
- Protector: An alter that serves the purpose of guarding other alters from harm or perceived danger through various means. This may include pushing to the front to prevent other alters from experiencing harm of any sort, or pushing external people away if the protector senses any kind of danger from said external person.
- Animal Alter: Animal alters are typically created when an abused child identifies with animals more than humans. They can also form when a child is treated like or repeatedly called a particular animal or animals and internalizes it. Animal alters may serve as protectors or various other roles within a system.
- Persecutor: An alter that is generally perceived as antagonistic by (at least some) other members of their system. Persecutors often have a protective mindset behind their actions despite a potentially distorted world view, and are regarded by some to be "misguided protectors", though this isn't always the case. It's important to remember that all alters should be treated with the same amount of respect and kindness as any other.
- Introject: Alters that absorb the traits of, or believes they are actually someone else that the system as a whole knows or is familiar with (real or fictional), occasionally mimicking an abuser. Introjects that mimic abusers typically attempt to keep a given system "in line" to protect the system as a whole from further abuse, though their methods of doing so often come off as antagonistic and and they can easily be labelled as persecutors.
- Gatekeeper: Typically refers to alters that have the capacity to control when other alters switch in and out. This can be partially or completely preventing or forcing a switch. Gatekeepers often have similar control of memories (especially in regard to traumatic ones), and can insert or "snip out" specific bits of memory from another alter's stream of thought.
- Integration: The process by which two or more separate alters "fuse" into one individual. This can be experienced in several different ways. For example, two alters could integrate and one could essentially "disappear", and may contribute their individual memories and mannerisms to the "remaining" alter. Integration of two (or more) alters can also cause a "new" alter to form; essentially, the alters who integrate "disappear", and a new alter who is a mixture of the former, now integrated alters "appears". Integration is complex and oftentimes controversial.
we collaboratively wrote up this list in out own words, based on what we assumed people would want/need clarification on. our definitions of these things aren't universal to every system by any means! this is just how we define them.
included at the end of this page is a list of basically the same as well as additional terminology, for anyone who may need to hear a term phrased differently or a wants a piece of info not included on our list.
